Marc Soper  -  Lunch at Pirinoa Station in the Wairarapa for 6 people, serving a combination of dishes including 2011 Wellington chef of the capital award winning dishes and utilizing some of the finest regional products available

Jan Bilton -  Cloudy Bay Winery will be your venue for 8 guests to sample the very best of Marlborough with Jan Bilton for a cooking demonstration and luncheon to be matched with Cloudy Bay Wines

Julie Biuso - Cooking Class and Lunch for 6 in Julie Biuso’s home featuring fresh produce from the market, organic meats, and eggs from Julie’s own chickens.

Who we are

Farmers’ Markets New Zealand (FMNZ) is a membership organisation representing fresh food markets selling direct to the consumer.

Our Mission Statement is to:

"Support and promote the development of Farmers' Markets in New Zealand."

What is a Farmers’ Market?

There are 3 Golden Rules for Farmers' Markets and their stallholders:

(1) A Farmers' Market is a food market (e.g. no arts, craft, bric-a-brac) with some exceptions for plants and flowers.

(2) This food is produced within a defined local area (each market can define their local region)

(3) The vendor must be directly involved in the growing or production process of the food (e.g. no middle men, on-sellers, wholesalers, retailers, etc... )

Pak n Save thinks they are a Farmers' Market ??

The current advertising campaign by Pak N Save, comparing themselves to "a Farmers' Market, except indoors" is grossly misleading and little more than an attempt to leverage off the good name and continuing growth and success of Authentic Farmers' Markets.

A Farmers' Market is a community of independent growers and artisan food producers who meet regularly to sell their food products directly to the public. That food is produced in a defined local region. There are no middle men, no supply contracts, no bulk buying agreements, just independent producers selling their food products at fair prices.

Pak N Save supermarkets do not resemble Farmers' Markets in any way; they do not sell only food, the people who produce the food do not sell it and the food is not grown or made only in a defined local region.

A complaint has been laid with the Commerce Commission under the fair-trading act in regards to misleading the shopping consumers of New Zealand.

The focus of the Pak N Save, is "New Zealand's lowest food prices" whereas the focus of Farmers' Markets is to provide access for the public to high quality, seasonal, locally produced food, thereby supporting the local economy and social fabric of New Zealand.

Farmers' Markets New Zealand urges shoppers not to be fooled by this advertising campaign and see for themselves by visiting a Farmers' Market near them.

Taste Farmers' Market Awards 2011

In a time of debate over high-fructose corn syrup, high salt, high fat, food miles, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides and genetic engineering, it's good to know that some things stay the way they should – fresh, natural and local.

The first-ever Taste Farmers' Market Awards 2011 are out to unearth the finest, freshest, most authentic food that is value for money.

Community members are encouraged to vote for their local farmers' market in the 2011 Awards by visiting www.tastefarmersmarkets.org.nz. A trip for two to Singapore is up for grabs for one lucky voter to explore Singapore's farmers' market and join in traditional cooking classes.

"Everyone loves the taste of fresh produce, particularly when it has been grown close to home. Farmers' markets are all about celebrating seasonal, local produce that enliven our senses, and our cooking," says Chris Fortune, Chairman of the Farmers' Market New Zealand Association.

"With the price of food on the rise, farmers' markets and their affordability are growing in popularity. There has been a real shift in the attitude of consumers - New Zealanders want to know what is in their food, and how it's grown," he says.

The Taste Farmers' Markets Awards 2011 will put the spotlight on the very best markets from around the country and encourage the idea of communities supporting their local producers.

A 'Pop Up' Farmers' Market was held at the middle of one ofChristchurch's worst hit earthquake suburbs on Saturday morning. It was a chance for Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs, Sumner and Lyttelton locals to access fresh food in a safe community space.

Local organiser Tom Davies said he was overwhelmed with the turnout organised on very short notice, in a less than normal environment including households without power or water, closed roads and liquefaction on site.

"This was a market organised for our people by our people, with everyone pitching in to clean up the site or make homemade posters and signs. Information was spread by whatever means we could".

Cam Booker, a vegetable grower, organised the stallholders who came from as far away as the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury. "Everyone wanted to help get fresh fruit, vegetables and bread to people who have had no supermarkets or any other food outlets open locally" he said. As well as selling vegetables, Cam bought down a pallet of free royal gala apples for people to help themselves.

Angela Clifford, grower & Canterbury food supporter was also involved in organising the market. "Some of the stallholders who were there have lost 85% of their business over the last week. They can't stop their produce ripening but they now have no restaurants or other outlets to sell to. The earthquake has also put a temporary halt to the Lyttelton Farmers' Market, another source of income for them."

Coffee was free for locals and was made by a couple of guys whose CBD coffee cart business had been affected by the quake. The coffee beans came from a local Christchurch roastery who have lost just about everyone one of their retail outlets in the city.

The cost of the coffee was covered by the profits from another stallholder selling bread who donated the money to the market.

"The coffee queue was enormous" laughed Angela "but no-one was leaving it". "Imagine how good your first coffee in 10 days tastes!"

Celebrity chef Jonny Schwass & Masterchef winner Brett McGregor cut up the onions for the BBQ. "We're just trying to help build the community up from ground level and one of the best ways to do that is the good old-fashioned kiwi sausage sizzle".

"We were offered so much support," said Tom, "the Darfield community trucked in free drinking water that didn't need to be boiled, and everyone brought down their containers to be filled".

One of the most poignant moments was the singing from the Linwood school students. They were sharply dressed as they were going straight from the market to the funeral of their classmate who had been killed in the earthquake.

"It's such an extraordinary time. The resilience of the human spirit is amazing - watching people hug and greet each other. It's amazing what can grow from the dust and rubble."

The 'Pop Up' Farmers' Market will happen again this coming Saturday 12 March from 10am to 1pm at the Mt Pleasant Community Centre, McCormacks Bay Rd Mt Pleasant Christchurch.

Farmers' markets, which have come to symbolise community resilience in the aftermath of global disasters, will offer traumatised Christchurch residents an opportunity to gather and comfort each other and buy fresh food.

After Hurricane Katrina flattened New Orleans in 2005, the local farmers' market was among the first of businesses to re-emerge, and it would be the same in Christchurch, said Farmers Markets New Zealand chairman Chris Fortune.

Christchurch's markets at Dean's Bush would open as usual this weekend, and while Lyttelton's Farmers Market would be closed until further notice, a "pop up" market had been organised for today at the Mt Pleasant community centre for the Sumner, Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant, Woolston, Linwood and South Shore communities, he said.

Farmers' Markets New Zealand would donate the costs of coffee and milk for this market, so local residents could get a free cup of coffee, Mr Fortune said.

Pop up market co-organiser Angela Clifford said the event would give access to fresh food for people who had no local food outlets, and offer a safe community space to meet.

Farmers' Markets would also be a lifeline to fresh food producers in Canterbury who had lost much of their market, particularly those supplying restaurants and other businesses in the Christchurch CBD, Mr Fortune said.

Farmers' markets were "great invigorators" of community life, he said.

The pop up market will operate from 10am to 1pm.

Mr Fortune, a restaurateur in Blenheim, said the Christchurch earthquake had even restricted food supplies to Marlborough. Much of the region's staple food supplies such as milk, flour and bread come from Christchurch processors whose production has been affected by the quake, or which were holding back supplies for city residents.

Ironically Blenheim had a dairy processing factory of its own until Goodman Fielder shut it down and moved processing to Christchurch around three years ago, Mr Fortune said.

We have many friends in the farmers market family in New Zealand and have worked with the market in Christchurch. The recent news from that wonderful city has deeply saddened us. We hope that the city, its people and the market can come back even stronger than before, our thoughts, sympathy and best wishes are with our Kiwi friends at this difficult time.

Linda and John continue to roam the northern hemisphere working with farmers in Europe and the Americas.

The third week of January was the week for the Farm and More Conference in Bournemouth in the UK and an opportunity for Linda and John to give a talk to the British farmers markets on what we had done in establishing the Kalamunda Farmers Market as a tourist destination.

We were surprised at some of the discussions that farmer market managers were having in the UK.
Some of the markets would still prefer to have markets monthly or every other week. To us this seems a strange strategy, as we feel it would be very difficult to build customer loyalty when you force your customer to visit your competition every other week to get their produce.

If the aim was to build online shopping in the alternate week, then we could understand the strategy, but the majority of the market managers we talked with were not thinking that way.

The conversation then went onto pricing. Some market managers were concerned that consumers were price comparing with supermarkets and that this was becoming quite an issue. We were not surprised if this was an issue since the strategy in some markets was to encourage consumers to go to supermarkets three weeks a month and come to their monthly market on the fourth week. Of course shoppers would compare prices if the market was only operating one week a month.

As you can see there were some very heavy debates going on at the British farm market conference.

We firmly believe that price is not the issue at a farmers market, and should not be an issue. The issue is building the community and developing local product buying. They are the real issues and that focus is diluted when markets do not work to provide what the consumer really seeks in a market.

The trade show that accompanied the conference was a huge success and we really liked the UK demonstration kitchen on wheels. We will put pictures of the kitchen on our February Member Club Retail TV program as we believe this could lead to exciting opportunities for all farmers markets.
Markets today have a huge opportunity as the new consumer is getting switched off by traditional retailing and is looking for a more sustainable retail experience where they feel they are helping their local community and local farmers and producers.

We have had some interesting conversations and one that struck us was with the Fine Food Guild in the UK. The comment was that “local does not mean better.” We all know that this is an obvious statement, but one we all need to be aware of. We challenged the comment on purpose and quite rightly the response was that you can get a local artisan or grower who is doing a bad job and this could destroy the image of “local.”

When vetting new entrants into the market it is worth considering this statement. Are they actually providing the consumer with a better product? In most cases, local is better, but as the movement develops more producers will see an opportunity and may join the movement without the skills required and that would lower the image of the whole market.

In the UK they have set up occasional markets around “Taste.” Many consumers do not know what real food tastes like and tasty product will grow sales for all concerned.

Also in the UK, a report came out from Which magazine that suggested that organic food was not as nutritious as food grown with inorganic fertilizers. This is a debate that seems to be continuing and some serious research needs to be carried out to provide solid evidence the consumer can understand.

Ohoka Farmers' Market - Gem of Canterbury

Ohoka Farmers' Market, 20 minutes north of Christchurch, ran an Earthquake Relief Market last Friday at no charge to our stallholders who had managed to join us. It was well received within our local community. We sold out of bread by 10.30am and veges were flying out of the domain. We are continuing to operate every Friday morning 9am - 12.30pm from the Ohoka Domain and welcome any stallholders who have been displaced by their own markets in the Christchurch area. We have attracted increasing numbers of Christchurch customers and we wish to continue to welcome them to our peaceful market especially during these times of uncertainty.

Ironically just prior to this market we started a food bank at the market whereby stallholders and locals donate surplus fresh produce and goods and this is collected by a local charity group for distribution at 12.30pm - fantastically appreciated and supported by all.

Instead, a “Pop up” Farmers’ Market has been organised this Saturday in Mt Pleasant that will service Sumner, Redcliffs, Mt Pleasant, Woolston, Linwood and South Shore communities.

It will be a small market selling essentials such as bread, vegetables, meat and fruit & will provide the community with a place to come together and to buy fresh food. The event is supported by Farmers’ Markets New Zealand on behalf of Farmers’ Markets throughout the country.

So what is a localvore then ?

Sounds like some sort of posh y name for somebody who has too much time on their hands.

Well you can be a herbivore or an omnivore, so why not somebody who pays attention to where their food comes from and commits to eating local food as much as possible? This is not some nutcase religion, it is just about eating local. It is not an all-or-nothing venture, it is all about helping the environment, protecting your family's health and supporting small farmers and food producers in your region.

The first bite to being a localvore is to determine what local means to yourself and your family: it could be food from a 100-kilometre radius, if could be from the whole of the South Island or even the whole of New Zealand. It is an individual decision that you need to be comfortable with.

The key is that by creating a boundary, no matter how large or small, you are becoming conscious of the origin of your food. You can even go one step further and draw a circle around your home or region and this will help you with your food choices.

We are all born localvores, it is just that sometimes we forget just what is in our backyard and what is in season.

We may not be able to tackle the big issues of the world, but we are able to help build sustainable and connected communities by supporting each other.

Five ways to become a localvore in New Zealand

Visit a farmers' market. There are now more than 50 located from Invercargill to the Bay of Islands. Some are big, some are small, but the key is that they represent their regional seasons and producers. Farmers' markets keep small farms in business. Serve these with dollops of yoghurt for breakfast or dinner, or add a crumble topping and bake in the oven for a quick dessert. If all else fails, just eat them straight from the jar.

2kg whole Marlborough apricots

cinnamon sticks and cloves for each jar

4 cups white wine vinegar

500g Marlborough honey

With a fork, prick the apricots all over and place them into cold sterilised jars. Place two cloves and one cinnamon stick in each jar. Bring the vinegar and honey to the boil and simmer for five minutes until it just starts to thicken, then pour over the apricots. Leave to cool before sealing the jars. For best flavour, leave for one month and use within 12 months.

So what is a localvore then ?

Sounds like some sort of posh y name for somebody who has too much time on their hands.

Well you can be a herbivore or an omnivore, so why not somebody who pays attention to where their food comes from and commits to eating local food as much as possible? This is not some nutcase religion, it is just about eating local. It is not an all-or-nothing venture, it is all about helping the environment, protecting your family's health and supporting small farmers and food producers in your region.

The first bite to being a localvore is to determine what local means to yourself and your family: it could be food from a 100-kilometre radius, if could be from the whole of the South Island or even the whole of New Zealand. It is an individual decision that you need to be comfortable with.

The key is that by creating a boundary, no matter how large or small, you are becoming conscious of the origin of your food. You can even go one step further and draw a circle around your home or region and this will help you with your food choices.

We are all born localvores, it is just that sometimes we forget just what is in our backyard and what is in season.

We may not be able to tackle the big issues of the world, but we are able to help build sustainable and connected communities by supporting each other.

Five ways to become a localvore in New Zealand

In a country that can grow almost anything, farmers' markets are a rapidly-developing Kiwi phenomenon with over 50 operating throughout New Zealand.

As you travel around the country, farmers' markets provide a great insight into the regional heartland and are an ideal place to sample fresh, local fare, meet the locals and experience the New Zealand way of life.

Each market reflects its regional difference with the climatic conditions and environmental changes playing a role in the range of produce from north to south. You won't find the sub-tropical fruits of the north on stalls in Southland, nor is it likely the South Island's boutique beers and ocean catches will appear at markets in Northland.

In order to be an "authentic" farmers' market, each must be a food-only market, with no resellers allowed, so those who have grown or made the food are the ones selling it.

This seasonal market starts at the beginning of November and runs every Sunday through until the last Sunday of Feburary.

My TV show Annabel Langbein The Free Range Cook was filmed at my little cabin on the shores of Lake Wanaka, where I am lucky enough to maintain a large vegetable garden that provides much of my family's fresh produce.

I have always grown my own vegetables - something that was instilled in me by my father Fred, who maintained a prodigious garden that provided us with a nutritious and interesting diet.

When I started cooking, I learnt early on that the fresher your ingredients, the less work there is for you in the kitchen. With nature on your side it’s easy to be a great cook and enjoy delicious meals at the drop of the hat.

The fluorescent atmosphere of a supermarket may make everything look good, but looks don’t necessarily equate to flavour or succulence. And it is this difference in flavour which goes a long way to explain the phenomenal popularity of farmers' markets.

In the freshly picked harvests of local growers, we discover older and lesser known varieties of produce grown because they taste good, not because they suit the long life requirements of a supermarket supply chain.

I also like the fact farmers' markets create a sense of community – something fast disappearing from our lives as people get busier and the big chains bump out old-timer providores.

Each week at the markets, the same friendly faces greet and cajole. I love this chance to try something new and be tempted by an artisan spread, cheese or specialty sausage. So, even without a backyard garden, it's possible to enjoy what is in season at its very best. New Zealand is blessed with some wonderful farmers’ markets where you can support local growers and cook in sync with nature's harvests.

Spring Has arrived at Farmers' Markets of NZ

Our thoughts are with our nine Canterbury Farmers' Market members, we are all thinking of you and wish you the best after the devastating earthquake that happened on Saturday morning in Christchurch and surrounding areas.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our Farmers’ Market members for their support of the volunteer FMNZ Executive over the last 12 months. We have undertaken a number of new initiatives aimed at delivering benefits directly to our members and yet we realise that the work is ongoing and our job is far from done. Like most of you we are extremely busy in our personal lives and run on the good faith and energy that sees us through the working week. Then there is the running of our Farmers’ Markets - the most enjoyable part of the week!

Looking back on where we have come from allows us to see the progress that we have all made over the last decade – who would have thought that from humble beginnings, we would have grown into such a strong network of like-minded people.

Research is under way to pin down exactly how much farmers markets are worth to the economy since they emerged a decade ago.

A conservative estimate from Farmers Markets Association chairman Chris Fortune, a Marlborough chef and market founder, puts the figure at $30 million a year.

Waikato University is producing hard figures on the economic impacts of New Zealand's 48 farmers markets, as the national organisation cranks up efforts to future-proof local food trading and protect its unofficial brand.

New Zealand Farmers Markets are food markets where local growers, farmers and artisan food producers sell directly to local communities without a middleman. Stallholders can only sell what they grow, farm, pickle, preserve, bake, smoke or catch themselves from a defined area of their local geography.

The markets operate for a few hours on a weekend day, with some also operating on one week day.

Fortune, whose association was formed five years ago, says farmers markets have matured beyond being "teenagers".

"There's always a trendy stage with these things we are over that. We're past the look good, feel good stage. We're growing up, we're understanding what we have and using it to make sure the same model and principles on which we were founded are still there in 20 years."

Part of being grown up is protecting the brand, Fortune says, which is hard for a volunteer organisation with next-to-no funding.

The association is envious of its counterpart in the Australian state of Victoria where farmers markets' have received $8m in government funding.

Fortune says all his group needs is $200,000 annually "to make a difference".

"We rely on a volunteer committee at the moment. That's fine because it's part of the growing-up process but we've got to get better [closer to] with universities, to find the economic impacts on communities. Until we can collect and collate information on a national basis, we're always going to be seen as the little boys and girls."

The association has received $200,000 in the past from NZ Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Economic Development to help promote "Buy New Zealand". The money was spent introducing an "authenticity" standards programme, to which 60 per cent of markets have signed up, and launching a national website.

Fortune told the recent Farmers Markets NZ annual conference that global multinationals such as Campbells and Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals had approached the association wanting a slice of the concept.

"They want our customers over 50,000 a week, and that is very conservative. Otago attracts 5000 a week, Marlborough 2000 and that is over only three or four hours."

Fortune told the conference the markets and regional food producers needed to "stand up and claim what they own and what they need to protect".

"The only tangible asset that we all share, the only tangible thing we can truly claim to be ours and grow together is the two words 'farmers market'."

However, in its future-proofing mission and efforts to show who the "real" food producers of New Zealand are, the association is not commercially blinkered, Fortune says.

It is looking to engage with like-minded sectors and companies that will benefit its members through group discounts, generic sponsorship and regional funding pools.

Fortune says farmers market's have grown in popularity among those who don't accept mass produced food.

"Every week I get calls from producers stepping out of the mainstream for more financial reward and because supermarkets have chosen not to buy off these people.

"The fastest growth sector in New Zealand at the moment is support for butchers and delis. It's about shortening supply chains, about producers directly communicating with consumers, about where how and where it was grown, how to cook it."

Fortune says he started the Marlborough market after returning from overseas and producing fresh food from his land for his restaurant.

"As a chef I want New Zealand product. When I arrived back I was gobsmacked that my local butcher sent me Australian lamb, that my local supermarket stocked American asparagus, that I couldn't source local lamb.

"It all comes back to the supply chain and people telling us how we should shop and what we should buy through a limited distribution system of supermarkets where the major component of purchasing is price."

The closing of the third Farmers’ Markets New Zealand Conference held in Hamilton on June 6-8 brought to the forefront the importance of transparency and authenticity for all who attended. Delegates and key note speakers from America, England, Australia and New Zealand converged for three days for networking and sharing with the word “local” on the tastes buds of all. Keith Stewart, self confessed foodie and radio live talk back host, was serious when he claimed we are in the middle of a revolution. “We are at war, and we need to figure out who is on our side.” Keith spoke to the delegates reminding them that we are the future food producers of New Zealand .

Farmers’ Markets have grown sustainably ever since there introduction to NZ. Just 10 years ago Hawkes Bay, Marlborough and Otago were the founding Farmers’ Markets of these regional, economic growth incubators, of which now over 50 operate in locations through out NZ on a weekly basis. This being New Zealand’s main point of difference to the rest of the world, most operating farmers’ markets on a monthly basis.
Gareth Jones (FARMA, UK) holds NZ up as a " shining example of farmers’ markets working together to achieve the same goal. The majority of markets in the UK run on a fortnightly or monthly basis. They would never have sat in the same room together, let alone co-elaborated on future goals and strategies, of how to provide economic stimulus to regional and urban communities "

Chairperson of Farmers’ Markets NZ, Chris Fortune, summed up the conference with, “NZ regional food producers will make a long term economic and social difference in our local communities, not the promises made by council men seeking re-election or the corporate multi-national faceless companies that give us products they call food. This revolution will be led by the blueberry producers of Marlborough, the free range pork producers of the Waikato and the thousands of other real food producers of NZ. They are already playing an integral part in the lives of the everyday consumers that chooses to do their weekly shop at NZ Farmers’ Markets.”

The highlight of the conference was hearing from the newly appointed Patron of FMNZ, Bernadine Prince, co-founder of 12 Farmers’ Markets in Washington DC, which includes the newest Farmers’ Market opened at the White House. “NZ could be the leader of sustainable farming, feeding its own communities and be a continuing shining light in the world of Farmers’ Markets.” This was Bernie’s 4th visit to NZ in relation to Farmers’ Markets and she returns to Washington DC with as much information as she imparted to the delegates of the FMNZ Conference. She will share her new found knowledge with the newly founded American Coalition of Farmers’ Markets of which she is vice-president.
The key behind what all Farmers’ Markets have been doing over the last decade is Authenticity. Focus being on transparency and now is the time for all regional food producers of NZ to stand up and claim what they own and protect their only tangible asset. This tangible asset that we can truly claim to be our own and grow together are the two words “Farmers’ Market”.

FMNZs long-term focus is on the future transparency of farmers’ markets - the future is not only next week’s farmers’ market, or next years farmers’ market but farmers’ markets in 10 and 20 years time.

Farmers' market leaders from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Great Britain meeting at the 3^rdNational Australian Farmers' Market Conference in Victoria this week, pledged today to establish and uphold standards for farmers' markets and to create a platform for the exchange of information and best practice that will support the global, sustainable development of the farmers' market movement.

The group will initiate an open forum and invites local food producers, market organisers and supporters to participate in positive exchanges that will help to improve local economies and communities through farmers' markets, and provide greater access to locally produced food for all.

FARMA's Gareth Jones was among the speakers at the conference. Others included Richard McCarthy from Crescent City farmers' market in New Orleans, USA, whose experiences with Hurricane Katrina four years ago mirrored those of the population around Melbourne during 'Black Saturday's' forest fires last summer.

The organisers and speakers at the event took the opportunity to formalise future relations with a communique highlighting the urgent need for a rebalancing and relocalising of food around the globe in the interests of reducing carbon emissions and improving diet, livelihoods and the environment.
